Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford became the fifth Sooner to win the Heisman as he edged out fellow Big 12 gun slinger Colt McCoy and the reigning winner Tim Tebow.
Here’s the breakdown of the voting:
Sam Bradford: 1,726 Points
Colt McCoy: 1,604 Points
Tim Tebow: 1,575 Points
Even though Bradford won this prestigious award, it was Florida’s Tim Tebow who had nine more first place votes (309).
In my opinion the voters got this one right. Sam Bradford was College Football’s Most Outstanding Player of 2008. His 48 TD passes were tops in the FBS, and he led his team to a Big 12 Championship, a conference many called the toughest since the days of Barry Switzer and Tom Osborne back when it was the Big 8.
In my opinion the main reason Sam Bradford won the Heisman was his performance against Texas in Big D. Although McCoy’s Longhorns won the game, it was Bradford who stole the show as he threw for 387 yards and five TD’s.
Bradford now joins Tim Tebow as only the second sophomore to win the Heisman but should beware of the trophy’s recent jinx. Six of the last eight Heisman winners went on to lose in their bowl game including fellow Sooner alum Jason White who lost to the Bayou Bengals 21-14 for the National Championship in the 2004 Sugar Bowl.
