Written By: Ronny DhillonWith National Signing Day now passed us we have to still wait and see when Bryce Brown, the nation’s top recruit will sign his letter of intent. Brown, a senior running back at Wichita East High School in Kansas originally verbally committed to the University of Miami in Feb. of ’08. On signing day Brown was in Nebraska on a vacation with his uncle and said he just had to get away from the madness which is the recruiting process. Some are criticizing him and already dubbing him the newest “prima donna” in college football before he’s even played a down of D1 Football.
So where does that leave Bryce? And where will he end up going?
While Oregon, Kansas State and USC have made a strong push for Brown late in the recruiting process, I ultimately believe he’ll end up a ‘Cane. Miami has one thing none of those other school’s have, Bryce’s older brother Arthur, a sophomore linebacker who was one of the Hurricanes jewel’s in their top ranked 2008 recruiting class.
One thing other school’s will try to say to Bryce Brown to convince him to join their team is a chance to compete for a starting job. You see, the ‘Canes signed two great running backs in their 2009 class in Mike James, and South Florida’s top recruit Lamar Miller, which according to Rivals.com is the best running back combo in any ’09 class. So Bryce may be hesitant to ink with the ‘Canes seeing how they also have four other backs currently on the UM roster.
There’s no question Bryce is the best running back prospect since Adrian Peterson and maybe even Barry Sanders, but if he’s that good, why should he shy away from competing for a starting gig? If you’ve been following this saga you’ll know that Bryce and his mentor Brian Butler have done a good job of marketing him. Butler has started up his own website (www.potentialplayers.com) where people can pay $9.95 per month to get up to date info on his players including Bryce.
But is Bryce Brown worth this hype?
Some experts will say his numbers were flawed because he played in Kansas, a place not known for their powerhouse football programs or players and he may be a product from that. If you’re wondering what kind of numbers he put up in his last two seasons at Wichita East:
Jr. Year (2007): 1,825 yards, 23 TD’s
Sr. Year (2008): 1,873 yards, 29 TD’s
So it looks like Bryce Brown will be this year’s Terrell Pryor, waiting to sign either late in February or in early March. But who knows, if Bryce really wants some attention, he may wait and sign until April 1st, the last day a high school senior can sign his letter of intent.
