A Texas Size Problem?

Written By: Ronny Dhillon

Recently there have been rumors from Dallas that Terrell Owens may be released by the team over the next week. Now this isn’t Jerry Jones saying this. If it were up to him, he’d keep T.O around however Jerry’s son Stephen thinks it’s time for a change. But would the Cowboys really be better off without T.O? I don’t think so.

Love him or hate him, 81 is still one of the best receivers in the game. In his three years in Big D, Owens has 3,587 yards and 38 TD grabs so clearly he isn’t slowing down anytime soon. If they were to let him go, the Cowboys would be stuck with Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton, Isaiah Stanback, and Austin Miles at the receiver position. Now that’s not the kind of receiving core that can win a Super Bowl. When Roy Williams was dealt to Dallas the expectations were high. But the dream marriage of this former Longhorn to his childhood team didn’t quite pan out. In ten games with Big D, Williams had just 19 receptions, 198 yards, and one TD. The other three remaining receivers for Dallas combined for a dismal 853 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2008.

But maybe Dallas is thinking of a plan B, after all this is the most historic and economically stout franchise in the NFL and they would have a plan B. Perhaps Jerry Jones is thinking of bringing in Anquan Boldin, T.J Houshmanzadeh, Chad Johnson, or even the Giants troubled wideout Plaxico Burress. Now all of these names are just speculation but the ‘Boys would have to give up a lot of young talent or high draft picks to get them. And we know how well bringing in high profile characters has been for Jerry Jones lately (i.e Adam Jones).

Another reason Jones should keep T.O around is to sell tickets. In 2009 the Cowboys will be moving into a brand new billion dollar stadium and they’ll need the publicity of Owens to sell tickets and create publicity.

And how could I forget about the #1 reason why the Cowboys should keep Owens around, Tony Romo. It’s clear Terrell Owens has single handedly made Romo’s career. Remember, it was 81 who wanted Romo to start over Drew Bledsoe a few years back, and I’m sure Romo would stick up for his receiver in a press conference like Owens did for his quarterback.
